Is it true that if your betta fish doesnt eat its food and it just sits in the water then it will posion the water? Someone told me that and I wasnt sure if it was true. Also, my betta fish has been alive for almost 2 years now. My cousins had betta fish and both of the fish died within 3 months. What is the normal life span of a betta fish? Oh, and one more thing. My dad said that this normal but I just wanted to check. When I cleaned my betta fish's water, it was red. (He's red) Is that normal? Thanks for all of your help.

1. Yes it will poison the water in a way. it will break down and cause ammonia to build up in the tank / bowl and tht will kill the fish.

2. typical life span for a well cared for betta is about 5 years. Some can go far longer and I have seen them last 7 years.

3. No it's not normal. I would suspect it's related to the uneaten food in the water. Many contain red dyes tht can tint the water if they are left in and uneaten for too long.

Uneaten food will break down and decay in the tank. This is not good for your fish as it fouls the water up faster. You might find a turkey baster to be handy for your betta bowl/tank to suck uneaten food out when he's done.

The "normal" average lifespan for a betta, provided the fish's conditions are kept decent, is about 2-3 years (sometimes they might be nearly a year old already when you get them). They have been known to live as long as 9 years before, though! Clean water, proper heat and food will ensure your fish lives a nice long time. :)

Your fish perhaps changed color due to stress. Be sure to acclimate your fish! You can do this by letting the change water sit out for at least a few hours so that its temperature stabalizes and matches the room temp that your fish is sitting at. Also be sure you dechlorinate the new water.

No the food will not poison the water. Make it messy to clean, yes. You have done well with your fish for 2 yrs. The water turning red could indicate something wrong with the fish.Check your PH and ammonia levels. If this has always been like that, don't worry. Your fish has done ok. When you buy new fish at a retail store, they are most likely already sick. Your friends bettas probably needed more care than they recieved. Bettas life expectancies are from 3 to 5 yrs.

I haven't ever seen the water of my bettas change to match their color, however a reddish tint to the water isn't unlikely as the wastes tend to ick up the water and generally that is a redder color due to the food and whatnot.

A fish (in general not just bettas) DO poison the water in a sense.... when they breathe and pee they excrete ammonia, which as you may know is poisonous. Their leftover food will also contaminate the water, but not exactly "poison" it. That is why routine maintenance of their environment is so important.

The typical lifespan of a well-cared for betta ranges from 2 - 4 years.

Sounds like you're doing a great job, keep it up! :)
