I have been thinking about the story for a long time. It is about the main character (a girl) who undergoes self acceptance and discovery when she falls in love for the first time. She dates the guy then goes to two others before coming back to the main one. I hadn't really given thought to if she should be a virgin BEFORE she meets him. It is important b/c she is innocent/alone beforehand, but I don't want her to be too pure.

How about making it vague? Don't say that she's experienced but perhaps hint that there was something from her past. Leave it to the reader's imagination. Depending on the reader, that "something" could be anything from secret fantasies to orgies.
Just leave it vague and focus on what she is like now.

It might make the character have a little bit more depth and be somewhat more believable if she isn't. Like you said, you want her to be an innocent and pure character, but if she is too innocent and pure, then she just won't be believable and people won't be able to relate to her.

Then again, she is supposed to be pure and innocent, so you may want to approach the topic with some degree of caution. Just be careful to avoid making her seem like she is too promiscious.

I guess it all depends on the tone you want to give it. If you want this to be a really rosy story of ideal love in a perfect world, I suppose a virgin makes sense - gives it that added idea of purity. Then your story will have a fairy tale kind of feel to it.
If you're shooting for something more realistic, with more in-depth character development and a sense of how life really is, then her past sexual experience and why she finally decided this was not true love gives her more depth and gives you a chance to work in more complex themes.

You could make her a born again street walker. That way she's got all that experience, but now she's pure again. Isn't that great how that works?

I think that she should be a virgin at heart...i think that you should say that when she was younger she got raped and has never been able to fall in love until now.

How about making her a "secondary" virgin...one who has had sex, but wants to wait again for the right one.
