Too simplistic. Yes, a fear of death may be the reason. But also living in an unexplainable physical world: where water came from and what is made? [H2o], Or, what are those tiny lights in the sky during nights? [stars] Or what are plants made of? So people created superstitions that led to religion and, finally, modern philosophy and science to explain thse phenomenas. But fear or no fear of death, religion is not going away soon. And I am not much a believer. But I understand religious believers.

That was the rather cynical explanation that Sigmund Freud gave for religion. There are many other explanations for the existence of religion--as a way of understanding natural phenomena, as a way of understanding questions of meaning and existence, as a way of developing and supporting ethical principles of conduct. Whatever you may think of religion, it's rather amazing that a large segment of the human race has some sort of religion. Attempts to dismiss it as "nothing but" some sort of phenomenon are rather sophomoric, the sort of thing you might get from an adolescent trying to prove what an original thinker he or she is.
