well... got 1.8 16v gti 1998 escort in petrol... few hours ago i got splashed by a lorry and the wave (honestly) went over the roof... it died in the middle of a roundabout... i couldn't start it again... opened a boot to find some smoke coming out from under an oil cap and from coolant tank... by now i found the leak in cooling system and disconnected (wires ripped out) water pump... the battery's fine... oil's still ok... it turns but doesn't start... i checked the coil and spark plugs... everything is dry and looks ok... what the hell happenned... and what might be a reason i can't start it now??? cheers for any help...

I drove my old ford pickup thru 3' of water once... it did the same thing. Turned out there was water in the distributer cap. Is yours carburated? (doubt it at that age...)


could be belts slipping... too wet.
could be wet spark plugs.
could be water pump isn't working since the wires are ripped out... if the water pump can't turn the crank shaft won't turn either, which means all it will do is crank, but won't turn over.

Moisture got in the distributor cap Remove and dry it out. Moisture could of also got into the air cleaner and carb. dry out the filter if it is wet (would be a good sign if got into carb) Through some STP in the tank, If you need to use some starting fluid to get the motor running to expel the bad gas in the carb

Well it got wet give it a couple of days to make sure all is dry and don't try to start it anymore or you will ruin it if there is any water in any electrical it causes a short
