It depends on the body in question. Some poeple's systems are more prone to digestive cramping brought on by exercise than others. I for one have to eat a good sized portion of food almost immediately before I train or race or else I get hungry and tired after a few miles. My body's been trained since it was 8-years-old for endurance and efficiency though so it has an advantage over the person who swims casually. Some people need to wait and some people don't eat at all before training. It's a pretty individual factor.

This argument pops up all the time in the running world too as to what's better and whether or not you shoudl eat and run and what you should eat, etc. It's the same there as well, it's a biological factor that affects everyone differently. You need to find out what works for you.

That whole waiting 30 minutes is an old wives tale. There is no problem with eating, unless yo decide to eat your thanksgiving meal than go to a meet. I have been a competative swimmer for over 11 years and eating doesn't cause any problems. My coaches always tell me to go eat a little something after my races to keep up my energy, usually carbs like some goldfish crackers. There is no reason why you should not be able to swim. I am a lifeguard too and if there was a problem, you would think that I would know of a rule about that to keep patrons safe. Just don't gorge yourself or all that up and down will make you throw up.

Not necessarily (I've done it plenty of times), but you can get cramps easier which can be dangerous if you're out swimming in deep water. So to be on the safe side people don't usually go swimming until the food is settled in the stomach.

you can get cramps and/or puke because of the pressure that the water places on the (full) stomach.
