My dad said it's not possible, but then he added "well, actually, who knows? with today's technology"

My bf is going on a "class afloat" as in, he does school on a ship, and I'm wondering if he might have the possibility of going on the internet to keep in touch, or not?

Well, I know two ways to get internet at the sea side.

Number One:

If you want to carry your laptop at the sea side, try and find a location where a cafe or restaurant is placed. Most cafes have a wi-fi connection, so if you are close enough, you get internet connection.

Number Two:

I've heard recently to the news that there is a kind of small satelite in pocket-size which you can connect it to your PC and get Internet anywhere in the world but of course, if the computer is in an area which the Satelite can read. Well, in most countries, this mini satelite is out. Bassically, is used for people who want a DSL connection but they live somewhere very far from the city where the DSL cable can't reach! And they created this satelite so everybody can get wireless internet, no need where he/she is/ I think this works by paying the satelite every month. No big costs. Most probably the usual costs of a normal DSL connection.

As I said, you get that in most countries. I think in America this thing is on the market but for example in Europe, it's out only in some countries! So just google about that thing or ask in an Electornics Shop or call some Local Internet Organizations at your country!

Hope I helped!

You can have internet at sea as long as the person has the wireless internet that picks up signal from Satellite. You should be able to keep in touch with no problems.

Satellite and cellular are available in most parts of the world. Due to the cost of satellite bandwidth, the ship may restrict its use by passengers as they likely need it very much to carry out daily business.
