We rented a car for a day trip while we are in Vegas and are thinking of going to Mojave.

Should we change our car rental to an SUV?

The Mojave can be a dangerous place for the inexperienced. I would suggest driving out, staying on the main roads, and seeing the views that way.

If your adventurous side really wants to come out, there are guided 4x4 tours.

If your adventurous and crazy side comes out and you want to do it yourself, I would recommend a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. This is the ultimate off road vehicle. It is light on passenger room. (seats 4 comfortably, 5 tight) But is has a locking front and rear differential that allows it to go thru anything.

If this is unavailable, get a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8 engine. If it is a 2005 or newer, the V8 equipped Cherokees have a low range 4x4 system that will help you thru a ton of togh terrain. The V6 does not.

Jeeps that are "Trail Rated" have been independantly tested for their off raod capabilities by the Nevada Automotive Test Center. These are the 4x4s that can take it.

But, please, if you do not know what you should drive off road, in the desert, I would not do it. There is too much to go wrong and it can be a loooonnnnggg way to go for help.(Think Chevy Chase in Vacation!)

It is hard to get off the highway. You may just want a car to see the spectular views from the highway. Best time.
Drive west from 4 to 8 p.m. and drive east from sun up 4:45 to 9 a.m.
it is a fantastic sight

A car with a high clearance tends to work better then an SUV, unless you are planning on going off road. If you do that you want a jeep or a Suburban

Be prepared for additional charges, especially one with 4 wheel drive. If it comes back with a mere microscopic ding, they will rape your insurance.
