He is a silly landlord if no tenancy agreement he will have a lot of problems getting you out of the property if he needed to. See citizens advice but if he wont give you one there is not much you can do. Make sure you either get a receipt for your rent or pay through bank so you have proof of it being paid.

If you're already living in his property then you have an agreement although it may not be in writing. This is perfectly acceptable: a landlord is not obliged to provide a written agreement and he may charge a reasonable fee if he does so. I suggest that you explain to him why you need a written agreement, although it would have been better had you sorted that out before moving in. The only other remedy is to find somewhere else to live.

As others have said contact a local housing advice centre for advice - there is a directory at http://england.shelter.org.uk/advice/advice-1005.cfm and most should be able to answer relatively uncomplex enquiries over the phone. Try the shelter number 0800 800 4444 (but Ive always had problems getting through when Ive tried it)

There is also general advice at http://england.shelter.org.uk/advice/index.cfm

You have a legal right. Remind your landlord of this. If he is reluctant to provide one,it's possible he isn't playing by the rules and wants to avoid various legislations..Make sure he signs something everytime you pay rent for your own protection...
