When I have the air conditioner on, occaisionally there is a short, loud "'swoosh" sound coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like a short burst of air. It is sporadic, intermittent, and doesn't seem to alter the car's performance in any noticable way. Is this anything serious?

It might be the pressure relief valve on the a/c compressor. If it happens more than a few times, you'll begin to notice a loss of cooling from the a/c. This can be caused by a cooling fan that is not working at idle or very slow speeds or it can be caused by a restriction in the a/c system. I'd take it to an a/c shop and have it inspected. If tit is he pressure valve relieving, there should be an oily area behind it.

i might be your compressor kicking in. You can hear it kick in. Better way of doing this is open your hood with the engine running of course and the AC running. Watch the ac compressor it will have a clutch in front of the pulley that does not move till its kicked in by the compressor and see if thats what is making your noise. If so thats normal.
