An airfilter is going to give you a very small increase in performance as far as HP. You might notice better response. I'd go for the whole intake. You can get them from a variety of places. I have a Dinan intake and Software upgrade for my 528i and I love how it performs. You also might want to do the software upgrade as well. They seem to work better together then seperate.

A high performance air filter will only provide a small benefit to a modern car when the engine is working hard and fast. The air filter only becomes restrictive when the engine speeds exceed ~4000 RPM. No obvious improvement in torque or HP; just it may sound a little better and probably a little louder.

A performance air flow is less restrictive, so it lets more air through to be burned. As a consequence you may need to change some settings. If you are after more performance you really need to fit the filter, change the exhaust get it chipped (or fit a power commander) and get the car put on a dyno where they will be able to assist with the chip / commander settings. The filter on it's own is probably not worth the hassle.

got to say yes, the easier the air can get into the engine the more responsive the performance, these filters are designed to increase air flow without loosing cleaning qualities.. the down side if you can call it this is that generally it sounds a little noisier..

I recently put a pipercross panel filter on my tdi. Been proved most of the time they make no difference to power etc but I thought I'd give it ago. Acceleration seems a bit sharper, no major improvements. Worth the buy though if you plan keeping the car a few years :)

a performance air filter is a very good buy because they are just about the best way to get a decent amount of horsepower for the least amount of money

Unless you like to rev your engine really fast, at really high revs; regular air flow is metered anyway, so no matter how much you "unrestrict" the airflow, it wouldn't make a difference in normal driving... PLUS, you will get increased intake noise - and this happens at all RPMs.

Not worth it if your expecting a great performance increase. If you want performance get it chipped.Remember to inform insurance co. if you make any changes from orignal otherwise you will invalidate your cover.
