Some of these people are insane, with answers like A-Rod and Daryll Strawberry... When you say baseball player everyone thinks of home runs, hits, stolen bases, etc. I think the best baseball player ever was a pitcher, and that's Nolan Ryan. Just look at the stats, they just don't lie...
All Star Games: 8
No Hitters: 7 (#1 all time)
Career strikeouts: 5714 (#1 all time)
Career record: 324-292
No one is better, period.

Hitter: Ty Cobb
There was absolutely nothing he couldn't do at home, on the field or the bases.

Pitcher: Christy Mathewson
I don't think anybody will match 5 Pitching Triple Crowns or 2.13 lifetime ERA.

and well Babe Ruth, as a pitcher he was an ace...but if he had concentrated as an OF since the beginning of his career, probably we woudn't be talking about Barry Bonds chasing Aaron.

Roberto Clemente was the last of the great five tool ballplayers, the best in the game.

Clemente could field the ball in Pittsburgh and throw a man out in New York.

cant go wrong with names like ruth williams mays cobb arod but if by best ball player you mean who did the most coke than yeah strawberry is on that list otherwise no. i think maybe you partyed with him a little to much huh. and nolan ryan not even in the top ten best pitchers. 3rd most loses ever. worst win% of anybody with 300 wins. most walks ever. most hit batsmen ever. 5th most innings ever. only reason he even has 300 wins is because he played about 6 years longer than damn near everybody else that played.

Babe Ruth. Was, is, and will continue to be for quite some time.

Why doesn't anyone ever ask who was second-best? At least that one could generate some discussion. Without giving it more than token consideration, I'd go with either Cobb, Mays, or Wagner.
