I think there are three main reasons:
1> the 500 HR club is no long an important milestone in modern baseball. In the 120 season (pre-1995), there were 14 members. Since 1995, there have been 7 additions to the 500 club, with several possible this year (A-Rod, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome and Manny Ramirez). With the steroid era inflating homerun totals and possible weaker pitching due to expansion/reduction in talent pool in the MLB, 500 is just not that important.
2> Homeruns are not as special: after the glow of the Sosa/McGuire chase, then Bonds take of the single season record and now his assault on Hank Aaron, there's just been a glut of home run related records. Now, mix in the bursting of the steroid bubble, and all this talk of home runs is simply not as appealing to the casual fan.
3> Frank Thomas just hasn't been that memorable of a star. All those years with the White Sox really didn't stand out, even if you consider his two MVP seasons. Sure, he could blast those homeruns, and his streak of eight seasons with 100+ RBIs was nice, but the Sox didn't win the World Series on the back of Frank. He only played 35 games in the World Series winning season (his last with the Sox), and before that, from 1990 - 2004, the Sox only appeared in two post-seasons (1993 was the best year, with the Sox losing in the ALCS). He never was that clutch guy you needed to watch at the ballpark, and being a designated hitter definitely lowers his assessment in many fans' eyes.

Hitting 500 home runs doesn't have the impact it once did. With Bonds on his run towards Hank Aaron, with Sosa just passing 600 home runs, Griffey just past up Mark McGwire on his way to 600. Hitting 500 doesn't seem like a big deal.
At the same time I think Frank Thomas has always been given the shaft when it comes to his accomplishments. Even when he has a monster season, he doesn't even get an All-Star consideration.

Haven't you heard? 500 is the new 400; sure it's got a bunch of zeros, but it's a cheap accomplishment that anyone can do nowadays. Plus he's in Canada, which from a media point of view is like playing on Mars.
Feh. It's a big milestone, it STILL IS HARD TO DO, and it's about time Frank got there -- he's had almost as many health issues as Griffey or Gonzalez. If he were playing for the Yankees we'd never hear the end of it, but he's in Toronto, and so gets the silent treatment. sigh.

Yeah I cared reason I care appropriate to the game of BaseBall!!! No 500 will nevertheless be the foremost homerun!!! Poeple basically dont get it !! Do you have any thought how complicated that's to end this feat?? On June 28, 2007, Frank Thomas became the twenty first participant to hit 500 living house runs. He became into observed via Alex Rodriguez on August 4, 2007 whilst he became the twenty 2d and youngest ever, to hit his 5 hundredth living house run. the main modern-day participant to connect the 5 hundred HR club became into Jim Thome on September sixteen, 2007. additionally you may upload Tom Glavine 3 hundred occupation win...He very nicely consistent with possibility the final pitcher to ever win 3 hundred video games in his occupation. Randy Johnson is the closest energetic pitcher with 284 yet harm won't enable him to get the sixteen wins he desires he's observed via Mike Mussina with 250 David Wells 239 Jamie Moyer 230 and Curt Schilling 216. I dont think of all and sundry of those gamers will achive 3 hundred occupation wins do to age or harm...

He is one of the great baseball hitters of all time and will never get the respect that he deserves, look you his stats, amazing, power, avg, RBI, walks protecting the plate. also to his credit talked out againt steriods way before it was popular, talked about how he worked out harder then any one he knew, but people are getting stronger then him
He has been kind of a jerk his whole life, not a Bonds like jerk, but has the ablity to say the wrong thing at the wrong time, like he didn't know who Jackie Robison was when he was asked
did not build his house with Union workers when he was on strike with his union
always bitching about his contract when he was making over 9 million a year
Oh by the way he should have had 2 more MVP, last year he was close and took his team to the playoffs, it was him
and one year he lost to a jucied up Gambi
by the way I am looking foward to it, and I am a Met fan

First he is in Canada and loses a lot fo publicity. Plus you never know when he is goign to break down and end that hunt for 500 for a while. Then there is A-Rod getting close, also Sammy going over 600 and Griffey swinging like the old Griffey...plus some guy named BOnds is close to another huge mark.

More celebrated players are reaching milestones as well. Griffey is about to reach 600. A-Rod is about to reach 500. Sosa just hit 600. And well Bonds is about to become the all-time HR leader. Thats why you dont hear about Thomas.

People are talking about it, at least I have heard them doing so. I was aware several days back that the "Big Hurt" was closing in on 500. He hit his 499th yesterday.

Because of the corked bats, steroids, livelier balls, and attention given to Barry and Sammy, suddenly 500 HRs doesn't seem as big a deal. I disagree of course, and believe 500 HRs to be a hell of an achievement.
