I have a laptop with a wirelss card but don't live in an area that provides wirelss service. can I just plug the computer into the jack my desktop uses or do I have to take the card out first? sources appreciated

You do not have to remove the wireless card first.

I would assume you are referring to a removable wireless card (WIFI)such as the Linksys WRT54G and not a built in one. But, that doesn't really matter. The connection used by your desktop is for either telephone dialup, or some sort of LAN broadband service such as a cable modem or DSL. These methods of communication (WIFI, telephone, LAN) with the internet are completely separate and do not interfere with each other. Just plug the desktop cable into the "LAN" port on the laptop and it will work although you may have to do some setup work. Leave the WIFI card alone. It isn't doing anything and won't interfere with the LAN connection.

You can just plug it in...you shouldn't need to remove the card for it to work. But, if it doesn't work, try removing the card.
