The only time I've heard the term backwash is when someone takes a drink and when they tip the cup to drink and put it down, they put some of the liquid back in can/bottle with some spit in it... sometimes intentional or unintentional... It doesnt happen all the time, but I dont really like to drink after others cause of it... hopefully that's what you're thinking of

Backwashing is when you reverse the flow of the water to clean the filter. Here's how you do it:

1.Vacuum first. Backwash after.
2.Attach vacuum hose and adapter. Flood hose with water before placing adapter in skimmer to avoid loss of prime.
3.Vacuum per manufacturer instructions.
4.Remove vacuum equipment.
5.Switch off pump and close valve to pump.
6.Clean skimmer basket and hair basket. Hair basket is attached to pump.
7.Open valve to pump. Turn filter handle to "BACKWASH". 8.Switch on pump. Operate until sight glass begins to clear.
9.Switch off pump. Turn filter handle to "RINSE". Switch on pump. Operate until sight glass is clear.
10.Switch off pump and repeat step 7. "BACKWASH" and step 8. "RINSE".
11.Switch off pump. Return filter handle to "FILTER". Switch on pump.

It's not hard! Good luck!
