Females can get a bit nasty sometimes. First of all, the male and female should not have been house together. Eventually one will kill the other as you have found out.

She killed the guppy over territory probably.

I can also suggest that you check your "female" very closely to be sure it's not a short finned male.

Bettas, even females, can be aggressive fish. They will sometimes be suitable with other fish, but like any betta of either sex, the individual fish may have a feisty temperment. Bettas should never be kept with guppies or other fish with long flowing finnage. Put her in her own small tank would be the best advice I can suggest.
Yes, it could even be a short-finned male variety known as a plakat. That's another possibility.

Your ratio may be your problem. A male can be housed with females, but generally it needs 4 or 5 females to the one male. Also be certain that the one "female" you have is indeed female. As for the guppy... betta's tend to not like other fish that LOOK like themselves also (so dont get a female betta that looks like that fancy guppy and plan to house them together without troubles). I find (in my own experiences) that the bettas do best without other breeds in their tank if you are going to have more than one. If you are having ONLY one betta, than other breeds in the tank with it arent as much of a problem. This however is only from my own experiences. You can also allow your other fish some peace by "heavily planting" your aquarium (fake plants are fine for this). It gives them more areas to hide, as fish like to do.
Good Luck

Betta fish are fighter fish, meaning if they see any other fish they will fight with it and kill it. Put a mirror in front of your fish and she will go crazy. You r not supposed to put betta fish with other fish, only by themselves.
