I have two goldfish, I have had them for about 4 years, and I was wondering if it would be safe to put a black light over the tank. I have always used a white florecent light, and I was wanting to know change things up a bit. Is this OK?

While it won't cause them any direct harm, It wouldn't be exactly good for them either. It could be an interesting study what weird algaes start to grow and how much it will affect your goldfishes color over time.

Actually black lights have caused neon tetras to go crazy. This will eventually happen to the goldfish. I work at a fish store so I actually do know what Im talking about =)

Hi Aaron, It probably won't do any harm but as you have had these Goldfish for 4 years you are obviously doing something right so why change now? I would recommend you leave their tank as it is, animals rarely thrive on change & they are obviously happy as they are.

It shouldn't harm them too much but introduce it gradually for a few minutes a day then increase it until you are using it for as long as you want to.
If your fish are happy swimming in the dark it shouldn't be a problem for them.

If you are unsure, I would say for you to call your local aquarium shop. Maybe call the place you got your fish, unless it was Wal-Mart, they probably wouldn't know. But if you have a fish store nearby that you know has been there for a while, they would be a good one to ask for sure.

It'll be fine. I don't see why you'd want to do this but it won't hurt them. I'd suggest buying new gravel or decorations for the tank than doing something tacky like adding a blacklight. Your fish aren't fuzzy posters.

but you had to let them get use too it for a while if the didnt get use to it well dont use any black light
