We live in VA. We're looking for a place preferably without a long waiting period and where it will be easy to find an officiant. We're moving to the UK and I cannot start my student dependent visa application unless we are in a legally sanctioned union. (as long as its recognized by the state its given in the UK will recognize it)

Try: New Hampshire, New Jersey, Vermont or Connecticut

Those are currently the ONLY states with Civil Unions.

Massachusetts has Same-sex marriages, but you have to be a resident of the state/commonwealth.

Canada has no waiting period and no residency requirements! You could try there too....but it's not recognized in the US...so transfering it to the UK as US citizens might be tricky at best.

New Jersey just leagalized civil unions a few months ago.. its probably the closet state to VA.. like a 4-hour drive.. i have no idea if there's a waiting period though.. other than that im sure Vermont doesn't have a waiting period because they have had civil unions for YEARS (first state!!) but its a wayy longer ride... hope that helps :)

and best of luck to you both!!!
