There are many types, but the one i know best and is most common is texas holdem.

Everyone is dealt two cards. For beginers you should fold most hands except AA,KK,QQ, and AK. There is also something called blinds. There is a big and small blind. They are forced bets to get the action going. For example if the game didnt have blinds everyone is going to just wait for pocket aces. If you are not in the blind you have to at least "call" the big blind to continue to the next round. To call something means that you have to put the amount that is bet by someone else. For example if the big blind was 3$ you would have to call 3$ to continue. If someone after you bets another 10$ you would have to call another 10$ to continue. You could also raise if you want. This means that people have to call how much you raise into the pot to continue. This round when you get the cards is called preflop.

After preflop is the flop. It is when 3 cards are put on the table which are called community cards.. You try to make the best hand with these 3 cards and EVERYONE can use them. For example thats say that you hold A,10 and the flop comes out A, 5,9 you have top pair because you have the ace you hold and the ace on the boaard. If you dont have anything you have the option to "check" which is to not bet at all, but you want to continue to the next round. However if someone bets, you would have to "call" that bet to continue to the next round. You could also have the option to "fold" if you dont think your hand is best. To fold is to get rid of your hand. So remember in every round you have the option to call, bet , raise, check, or fold. Here are the rankings of poker hands and you try to make the best one.

Anyways after the flop is something called the turn. Another card is put on the board for you to use to make a hand. Thtas say the turn card is a 10 now, So the board would be A,5,9,10 now. You have flopped 2 pair now because your starting hand was A,10 so would obviosly want to bet or raise someone.

The last round is called the river. It is just like the turn.

Hope this helps. If you dont get something just use this link-

There are many different types, but all share the same theme: get the best 5 card hand possible. Look up the different hands online.
