To what "people" are you referring?

Southern whites tend to be disproportionately more conservative, narrow-minded, ethnocentric, and in some cases even bigoted than those in any geographic location within the U.S. So if that's what you're getting at, there you have it.

However, I would be careful how you throw around the word "hate," as it typically indicates an irrational bleeding-heart mentality.

If you are talking about the United States, its a historical leftover. When large numbbers of southern Europeans emigrated to the United States in the early 20th century, they were ridiculed and discriminated against by the largely north-European ethnicity whites. Including being labeled non-white themselves (you still see this in the labeling of hispanics as non-white).

Many of these immigrants, in order to assimilate and appear "more white" became among the most vicious abusers of African-Americans and other non-Europeans. Human nature being what it is, they thus incurred the resentment of the black, etc. community. That set up a long-enduring fracture between these ethnic groups; it has diminished a good deal in recent decades. But its still there--kept going by the bigots on both sides.
