I personally think if julio lugo continues this horrible streak of badness he will be the red sox's worst baseball player in they're history. currently he has an average of .190 and is 0-31 in his last 31 at-bats. He needs to be sent down to triple a because he just can't play major league ball anymore. In seventy one games this season Julio Lugo has only scored 33 total runs. The only reason the red sox have to keep him is because he is fourth in the AL in stolen bases, but how is he going to steal bases if he never gets on base! He also is very impatient at the plate giving him two walks in his last ten games. He is a real waste of money he has signed a four year 36 million dollar contract. Honostly I don't think he should even be earning have of what he is earning right now, and look at this against lefties he has not even gotton 20 hits so far that really stinks, but really he played pretty good for the teams he played for before the red sox and he just stunk when he got here. Well I hope that concludes my answer.

Not Bellhorn. He wasnt great in the regular season and he has the franchise record for strikeouts in a year. But without him they wouldnt have beat the Yankees in 2004. Your all forgetting one man. John "Way Back" Wasdin. He was absolutly horrible. He gave up a home run every time into a game. He did however pitch a perfect game in the minors against a team managed by non other than ex-Red Sox great thrid base coach "Wave 'em Home" Wendell Kim.

WMP isnt even an everyday player so how the hell is he missing 100 opportunities per game? Currently I will go with Lugo, he is batting in the .190s and getting paid enough that he should be hitting .300 and making gold glove plays. He isnt getting the job done with the bat or in the field. I miss A-Gon and Orlando. These guys were quality SS and we let them bounce for Renteria and Lugo? I love the Sox but our shortstop problems need to end. Ya we had Hanley Ramirez, but we got Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell in the deal so I'm not complaining after losing him and Anibel Sanchez, who has done zero.

Chipmaker got the last name right. The worst, without question was Haywood Sullivan (the daddy) who later became Owner and General Partner of the organization. He played from 1955-1963 as a back-up catcher and had a career batting average of 123 in 851 at bats. I wish there was enough space here to tell you a great story about Haywood and Jimmy Piersall, maybe someday. Haywood and Marc had to be the worst father and son combination to ever play in MLB.

I would say every washed up player at the end of his career they over payed for in the 90's goes on that list...and Mark Bellhorn? Are you out of your mind? I'll give you he wasn't great but go back to the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees...without Bellhorn they wouldn't have won game six...you can call me crazy but I wouldn't put any player from the 2004 team on a "worst Red Sox" list...without every single one of them they wouldn't even have gotten past NY!

Carl Yastrzemski.
Not because of his ability (that level was high), but because he was such an *** while he was around. He actually wanted to create a "star" player's union, the creation of which would have screwed almost every player back before free agency. Read "Ball Four" for more details. . . .
The worst actual player is Bill Buckner. Guess why? :)

He got shelled in almost every start. What a joke.
Honorable mention: Ramiro Mendoza, what a bust...lights out with the Spankies then the Sox pick him up and he laid a big egg.
JD Drew might be added to the list if he doesn't live up to even half of that huge contract he signed.

Marc "my daddy was general manager of the team" Sullivan.
Here's his stats, but don't click if you don't have a strong stomach: http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sullima02.shtml
-----
Edit: Frizzer, good call on papa Sullivan as well, but SI's stats career stats are messed up -- Haywood's career AVG was .226, not .123 (consider emailing SI.com and telling them). Just eyeballing it you can see that .123 isn't right. His Boston AVG was .150, still major suckage. Anyway; while he obviously passed on his "talent" to his boy, I'll stick with Marc as the Worst Red Sok Ever, mainly because SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE must have seen something in Haywood's playing -- and he was an adequate piece for the A's after leaving Boston, for a couple of years -- but there is no way whatsoever that Marc got signed except through good ol' nepotism. Sullivan pere made sure Sullivan filis got to play. That, to me, knocks him down a notch.

Not Bellhorn - he had 3 key HRs in 2004 - one in game 6 of the ALCS to left field and one off foul pole in Game 7. He also hit foul pole in Game 1 of World Series.
Worst player was Dick Stuart.
