Actually YES you can. According to the bank that I work at, a minor may legally have an account in his/her own name. My bank, however, can place a good amount of restrictions on the account. Now, while that might be the case, not all banks follow that. For example, Wells Fargo has an account called the TEEN ACCESS account where you can be as young as 13, but you need a parent or legal guardian on the account. You should check with the bank that your parent/parents bank with and see what their policy is.

Some banks will have various 'kid friendly' options for accounts, but these almost always require the parent to be on the account with the child. Check your local bank for options.
For the regular checking account, most banks will require age 16 to open an account with the parents, or age 18 to open a solo account.

Unfortunately, no. A check is a legal instrument, like a contract, and requires that you be age of majority to be a party to it.

Alas. You can purchase a money order, though, if you need to send someone money without your parents' knowledge.
