Hello,
I'm Turkish and saw your question. You go to a hammam. this is a place where there is steam and hot water. Steam helps open yor pores and make a detox. After you clean yourself a person comes and makes a exfoliating and massage to your body. This massage is kind of a sports massage. After that they bring you herbal tea. And you go home and sleep. When you wake up in the morning your skin looks polished, you look like you have taken all the energy of the world and also very relaxed.
It is not a steam room. This is a whole culture. It has its special clothings, shoes and towels. It is for both women and men. You can spend the whole day there only pampering yourself. You have also services like epilation and womanly stuff.

The hammam (Arabic ḥammām حمّام, Turkish hamam) or Turkish bath is the Middle Eastern variant of a steam bath, which can be categorized as a wet relative of the sauna. They had played an important role in cultures of the Middle-East, serving as places of social gathering, ritual cleansing and as architectural structures, institutions, and (later) elements with special customs attached to them. Europeans learned about the Hammam via contacts with Turkey hence the European name for it: "Turkish" hammam.

In Western Europe, the Turkish bath as a method of cleansing the body and relaxation was particularly popular during the Victorian era. The process involved in taking a Turkish bath is similar to that of a sauna, but is more closely related to the bathing practices of the Romans.

Taking a Turkish bath firstly involves relaxing in a room (known as the warm room) that is heated by a continuous flow of hot dry air allowing the bather to perspire freely. Bathers may then move to an ever hotter room (known as the hot room) before splashing themselves with cold water. After performing a full body wash and receiving a massage, bathers finally retire to the cooling-room for a period of relaxation.

A typical Turkish bath as I remember (there was one locally untill it shut down) involves wearing a towel or going in your birthday suit and a pair of flip flops from one room to another each which offers various degrees of heat through the use of steam/dry heat and finally a very cold pool to finish off in.

i'm not sure, exactly, but i know they use AWESOME towels! ; )

no, honestly.. i think (but i'm not positive) it's like a group bathing area,(think indoor pool) and a meeting place for men to hang out and talk away from the women. just a regular ole community-type thing.
Peace,~Laurie
