Dense breasts? If so, what does that mean exactly?

Thanks in advance!

Cancer turns up five times more often in women with extremely dense breasts than in those with the most fatty tissue, a study shows, signaling the importance of a risk factor rarely discussed with patients.

On mammograms, fat looks dark, but dense tissue is light, like tumors, so it can hide the cancers. But this study confirms that cancers are also more frequent — not just hidden — in women with dense breasts.

Just make sure you get regular breast exams and monitor your breast for any changes.

If your doctor didn't order any tests for you then I wouldn't worry about it too much...he just wanted to inform you on your situation.

Take it easy!!! :)

Yes, I have always been told that. Dense breast tissue is very firm. Usually woman who have never had children have more dense breasts. After having children, they get...you know...more floppy.
Dense tissue makes it more difficult to detect lumps, so women with dense breasts are more likely to not find a lump while it is small.

But they look better.

It means that you have more dense breast tissue and not a lot of fatty tissue.

So if you lose weight you won't lose much in the breasts.
