For the past month everything water is touching has slowly been turning rust colored. Clothes are coming out with rust stains, the washing machine, toilets, sinks and dishwasher are turning that orange rust color. I am on a well and do have a water softener. What could be causing it-something in the water? Something with the water softener or water heater? I don't know if I need to call a water softener person, a plumber or if there is something I can try on my own. Please help!!

Sounds like you need to check the venturi valve on your water softener. You may need to replace the valve. No big deal. Easy-to-do.

You say your on a well, then it has to be Iron Bacteria, a chemical that contains iron chemicals that act with the air, it turns red when it stands. If you boil potatoes in it, they probably turn brown to black from the starches.
The whites turn rusty from the iron chemicals in the water. Take a jar full and set it out in the sunlight, see how fast it turns brown to black.
No water softener will correct this, the well has to go deeper to miss this vein.

Call in a water well service to see that I'm right, or a well driller who does cleaning of wells.

you have a lot of minerals in your water...is it city water or is it coming from a well? Its kinda orange right? A lot of my friends have well water and have that problem....it just needs to get filtered better.

You have rusty pipes. They may be old and you might need to replace your water pipes.
