Don't you mean azimuth?

If so, it's the angle between the actual alignment of the slit in the magnetic tape head and the edge of the tape. It can be adjusted a fraction of a degree either side of the vertical. For good high frequency reproduction the slit should be exacrly perpendicular to the tape.
