Both bands are great. Personally I would rather listen to Alice. His early work with his original band is some of the best written lyrics ever. Have you heard a song like "Dead Babies" off of Killer? I also love his later work like Brutal Planet. He has never stopped performing and is a legend. His live shows, wearing makeup on stage, etc. influenced countless 80's bands and even some of today's shock rock bands like Manson, etc. Cooper rules!

However, you really can't compare the two. Alice probably influenced more of the glam rock sound but Sabbath was the main influence on the heavier bands. They sort of died down in the mid 80's but they are getting recognized again. That is awesome because I like them too. The classic sound was with slow plodding bass, Iommi's killer riffs, etc. Every heavy band owes something to Sabbath (Sabatoge is my favorite album of theirs) and I would rather listen to early Sabbath than any of Ozzy's solo albums.

On todays metal, I'm gonna say Alice Cooper. Black Sabbath influenced all of the second wave of metal artists, but over time that has become somewhat diluted. A lot of metal artists these days seem to copy Alice Coopers image, as well as sound.

Black Sabbath has had more influence on the music. Heavy riffs and grim lyrics. Alice Cooper has had more influence on live performances. Acting the song out. I'd say Sabbath. Cooper still rocks though.

Every metal band in history musically has been influenced directly or indirectly by Black Sabbath. Alice Cooper has influenced bands more with his live performances than his innovative musical stylings, although he certainly holds his own. But Black Sabbath is the beginning and the end to all that is metal, from Slayer to Killswitch Engage.

I'd say Black Sabbath, though their stuff is musically quite a few steps away from the rougher sounds of Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, and other such bands. Black Sabbath is certainly one of the most influential hard rock bands, and they played a huge role in the founding of metal (especially Ozzy's stuff after he left Sabbath).

Alice Cooper had more of an influence on shock-rock. there was a great quote from an interview with him: I think it may be from the Letterman show. When asked about newer artists like Marilyn Manson, he looked straight at the camera and said (in a Darth Vader voice) "Marylin, I am your father..."

:) That's just what I think.

I prefer Alice Cooper. Id say all around, technically and stylistically Sabbath. Id say Coopers influnece probably peeked with the bands of the mid to late 80s, the look, the sound, and persona.
