It did happen. There was just no CNN and FOX to exploit it. It is still very rare. There are a lot more people today than there were 100 years ago, so naturally the possibility of it occuring is greater for that reason. Weapons are much more available to kids now than they were a century ago.
Remember in the sixties it was the police who shot students in cold blood at Ohio State University.

Kids 100 yrs ago were more likely to see death firsthand and appreciate the finality of it, kids these days are so desensitized by video games and violence on TV that they don't take it seriously. They didn't have the internet to network with other psychos and use as a form of escape to indulge in these violent fantasies. Also there was a time when kids respected authority, parents knew who their kids associated with, and they actually got disciplined when they needed it.

Because 100 years ago, people disciplined their children from infancy til they left their house, now a days, if a teacher gets on a kid for something at school, it's parents are ready to sue the schools. 100 years ago, kids had to do a hard days work BEFORE they could go to school. 100 years ago, kids didn't have all the outside influence like they do today from TV, radios, computers, etc....

The world's children (and adults) have become desensitized.

Watching someone get killed on TV, or "killing" someone in a video game means nothing to some people. The gore and violence in movies, games, in music and on television is profoundly graphic. Scenes that would have be prohibited years ago, are viewed on day-time television now. It's crazy ... I fear for my children and grandchildren. :(

Simply because they didn't grow up with all the violence and sex that todays youngsters see everyday, and if that isn't enough, that actually had a little respect for themselves and others.....

Plus they'd get the whipping of their lives when their parents found out.....
