I have a spare matress and I am thinking of getting some mdf cut at the local timber merchants - with the intention of making a base for it. The thing is, in order for it to slide easily under another bed (for storage) I need wheels on the bottem. Where can I get such wheels? And will my idea work???????

You can get wheels at any DIY shop that simply screw on the bottom of the MDF. Yes its quite plausible and lots of people do it.

First you need to measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the bed you plan to slide the other one under. If your spare mattress is 8" thick I doubt if it will work. Casters/wheels will take up about 2 1/2" + 3/4" for the mdf + 8" mattress you will need 11 1/4" minimum. Good luck.

a few things plywood would make the new frame lighter and easier to moove mdf is hella heavy in comparison... now casters and other such wheels can be found at home depot and lowes and the like... not hard to attach them either someone above mentioned furniture movers as well which is another option... they are basically a piece of really strong plastic that you put on the corners of a desk, hutch, or in your case a trundle and they can slide on carpet or flooring easily its a slight bit harder to moove then wheels but the plus side is that the bed wont roll when your in it... so if you go with wheels make sure they have a lock on them so when you pull it out its not sliding all over the room.... ;0) good luck with the trundle

Making your own trundle bed, huh?. Good idea. First, measure your exisitng bed to determine how much clearance you have for the mattress, MDF and wheels. My bed wouldn't be high enough, I know that.

You can get wheels at the hardware store. They just screw on. You'll have to tell the sales person what you are doing and how much weight you think will be on the wheels between the matress, MDF and bodies sleeping on the bed. It will easily be several hundred pounds. Get the appropriate wheels.......and don't forget center support......wheels down the middle, not just on the corners.

Yes this will work as I have done excatly the same. It worked fantastic as the floor is polished wood. but if there is a bit too much excitement at night the bed begins to roll around the room.

go to any good DIY shop and ask for the wheels make sure you tell them what it is for and they should give you what you need. try and get the wheels with beaks/catches to stop them rolling about during .............

Casters can be purchased at home centers. MDF is heavy and not very stiff, you may be better off with plywood for no more money. MDF won't hold caster fasteners very well either.

You can purchase things called casters at DIY stores. However, the idea of sleeping on a bed with casters on frightens me a bit. Wouldn't it move a lot? While you're on it?

See, you've had all the answers you need!

What I want to know is, can you get the 'well fit' boyfriend to squeeze under too when hubby comes home unexpectedly & you're looking all flushed?
