We dont have money to re-carpet right now, and there is old brown carpet in the living room. Its in good condition, just not my favorite look. Is there anything I can do to improve the look of the carpet besides buying an area rug or putting in new carpet? Any tips?

What is underneath the carpet? Hardwoods are better than carpet anyway (especially if you have allergies). Even if it is concrete, you can paint that and do different faux techniques on it and it looks cool. We moved into a rent house that had brown shag carpet in it. My toddler was continuously having sinus infections. No wonder...we finally ripped out the carpet and there was at least a half inch or more of dirt under it. He quit having sinus infections after that. My landlord then admitted the carpeting was over 25 years old. (He had previously said the carpeting had not been there very long.)

Do what I do, place a huge pillow or pillows or a coffee table or cube storage box.
Huge pillows allow for people to lay on the floor. Cube box stores items, like magazines, blankets, and so on.
Get a professional carpet cleaner in and it will bring life back to it and make it smell better again.
In time, you will have money to get what you want.

Rake it. Using a rubber nipped rake, pull up the fibers so they stand up. Vacuum very well and then clean it. If that does't work, put down a large area rug(s).
