So many wrong answers here! Yes you keep them in!
The plastic things you refer to are more commonly known as collar bones. The purpose of them, is to keep the collar straight, otherwise your collar leans to one side. It also gives a stiff look on your collar as you mention which is smart.
I wear formal dress shirts to work every day and I use brass collar bones and starch on my shirt collars as I like that look and find that comfortable. A lot of the plain white formal shirts now have the plastic collar bones inside the collar and seamed so you don't have the choice to remove them. I recommend you buy yourself a couple of brass collar bones, or silver collar bones if you can afford it. You take them out when you put your shirt in washing machine or get them drycleaned.
Trust me you will look much better with good collar bones in your collar, they are comfortable to wear and you don't have to worry about your collar looking like a dogs dinner.

Lots of wrong opinions from some of the Ladies. I wear dress shirts every day. A skinny pocket is manufactured in the collar because the tabs should always be used. As a matter of fact, some shirt manufacturers stitch the pocket all the way around so the stiffener cannot be removed. The collar supports should be used, and not discarded. It is a good practice to remove before sending them to the cleaners.

I hate those things, I avoid shirts with those. It doesn't matter on the shorter collars, but the longer ones with those plastic tabs, you really do need to keep it in.

Yes, you leave them in when you wear it... but you take them out and give them to the drycleaner to put back in and keep your collar straight once it has been cleaned. Nothing looks more unprofessional than someone in a smart suit but wearing a shirt with a wrinkled collar. I worked at a dress clothes shop and we sell kits of those to put in your all of your dressshirts to keep the collars from collapsing and saves a lot of work from having to iron and starch and all that mess.

These are called collar "stays" and they are supposed to remain in the collar to help it keep its shape.

No, you remove them. As long as you take care of the shirt properly, you shouldn't have any trouble with keeping the collar looking good.
Those guards are only put in there so that the shirts stay nice while in transit and while their in the stores. If they weren't there, the shirts would look all flat and horrible.
