I am terrified of having an epidural. I don't like the idea of a foreign object sticking out of my back that could possibly paralyze me. I figure if my grandmother and aunt gave birth with out them, I can do it too, it just really scares me. I want a natural birth but I'm scared of the pain!

I had the same issues as you do when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was determined to go all natural with no drugs. I had 34 hrs of labor & pushed for 2 more- with absolutely no drugs at all. After awhile you tend to get used to the pain & it isnt so bad. If your determined enough I believe you can do it without any drugs! Good Luck!

I was afraid of the epidural - until I had one. Then I thought I was crazy for almost choosing the pain of natural child birth over a needle in my back. It is true that sometimes epidurals do not work and those are usually the stories that you read on the internet, but of all of the many people that I have talked to about giving birth I have only actually met one who had a problem with an epidural.

I'm not worried about what the drug might or might not do to me, but to my baby. I've also read that with the lower body being numb, it can be more difficult to push, therefore making the birthing process longer and more difficult. I don't like pain. Yet, I love my child.

I agree. My grandmother gave birth fairly naturally, I'm sure. Mary and Sarah (of the Bible) did. If it's good enough for them, why not me?

I did some searches, "natural childbirth" and "pain free labor" that seems to yeild some good results. I was going to get up and get some more work done (I had intended on sitting down long enough to eat a sandwhich), when I saw your question. Later, when I break again, I'm going to weed through the sites, at least the first ten of each results page.

Also, this site, www.mothering.com has some good articles and information on natural childbirth as well. Idealy, I would like a water birth. My husband thinks I'm crazy for not doing it the new traditional way. Actually, ideally, I would like to be home with a midwife and/or doula and not worry about the hospital. However, that is not an option with this child. I'm just going to do it as naturally as what I can with this one.

I hope my rambling has helped.

There are other options out there. There's pain medication that can go through your IV. It'll take the edge off if you really need something. You don't have to get an epidural and if your scared of one I wouldn't even bother. Talk to your Dr. about IV medications. But do know that epidural complications are rare, medical science has come a long way since your grandmother and mother gave birth and the risks of having one have decreased dramatically. Good luck!

I am also the same way...I did not want a plastic tube in my back knowing that I could get paralyzed if I move...but...when you are in labor the main thing is to stay calm and listen to your coach or your mom and to the Doctor. I was in pain and trust me i wanted it but my told me that that was the worst it was gonna get and then before i knew it I was done. Women were meant to be strong so use your strength and do it natural you will love yourself alot more because natural birth is a very big accomplishment. I hope that you choose natural birth it is the best thing in the world...enjoy the experience and good luck!!!

I was petrified of having an epidural before I went into labor, but honestly...the IV hurts worse than the epidural. I think the chances of you getting paralized are almost slim to none now days. If you want to go natural...go for it, there are other pain options out there. Good luck with any decision that you make.

The pain was horrible for me and I knew even before I was in labor that I was going to opt for the pain meds. I was so scared when it came time to do the epidural i was literally sweating i was so scared when the dr was there to administer the meds but i just did as they said, closed my eyes and thought about seeing my baby boy in a few hours and it was all over with. Just clear your mind and youll do just fine!!

I am terrified of foriegn objects being put into my body (phobia, kinda). I am pregnant and I have told my husband I don't want an epidural, I will try to go without, if I can't handle it then I will try IV meds, if that fails and it's bad enough then maybe I'll ask for an epidural. I don't want to rule it out completely, but I don't want it to be the first thing we try.

The most part of that i am afraid of about going through labor is the pain. What i heard was that contractions are ten times worse that menstrual cramps. I want an epidural but i think that it is also another pain medication that can be given through the i.v.
