I have two goldfish. One orange, one gray. Every time I feed them, the orange one chases the gray one away from the food. What's the deal? I feed them a couple times a day, the exact amount the food recommends. The tank is fine, 10 gal with a filter and all that jazz. So what's up? Is the orange one just a meanie? What can I do to fix this?

They are common goldfish - feeders, basically. I won them at a carnival. They are the same size. Bullying started after the green one swam up the filter current and out of the tank and onto the carpet a few days ago ... he's missing some scales on his left side now. I don't know if that has anything to do with it?

Are the goldfish the same size, or is the 'gold' one larger than the grey one? If they're the same size, your 'gold' fish is a male, and the 'grey' one is a female ... but they're BABIES and that 'grey' one may change to a 'gold color' when it grows up. If they are of two 'very different sizes' then the larger is a 'bully' and you should 'separate' them, even with a 'net' across the tank, which you can get at any good pet store. The 'larger' fish will ALWAYS bully the smaller fish in a tank, and they may 'grow to be the same size' if you can separate them for now ... or you may just have to give them a tank that is always divided, or get another tank. If you have 'other fish' that could also be a problem, since goldfish are very 'territorial' and will act 'aggressive' to keep the other fish from 'taking over' their territory.
And you should STOP feeding them twice a day ... and DON'T give them as much food as the 'food container' says to ... goldfish are real scam artists when it comes to telling you they're hungry, and they will EAT anything you give them ... but they only need to be fed once a day or even once every two days, and then only about 1/4-1/2 as much as you usually give them in ONE meal feeding them twice a day! They POOP the 'extra food' out and that can make your tank DIRTY ...

Is one fish bigger then the other??
What type of goldfish are they??

My goldfish tend to fight sometimes. I spread the food around the tank when feeding so that thry are not in the same area with each other.

Some fish just like to be left alone. Put each fish in a separate bowl and see how things turn out. Especcially Bette fish.

All animals prey on the weak. The loss of scales indicates that it's now the weak one in the group -- they're acting just like a mob of middle school boys.
