As far as I know, any kind of pocket pets are allowed. My son had the Grand Champion Hamster one year and had a lot of fun with this. You will be judge on your journal, the condition of your pet and his container he shows in.

4-H has a very good guinea pig program.

For other animals, one point I would like to make is to be sure you understand what is meant by a "market" animal. It was surprising how many kids in the groups I encountered did not seem to realize that market animals were going to be sold for slaughter. In the goat division, the kids had a choice of raising a market animal or a dairy animal. Market animals bring much higher prices, so they chose that category. Then their parents tried to get me to lead the goats to the slaughterhouse truck because their kids were "too sensitive." So if you choose a livestock project, be sure you understand what you are getting into.

The animals that I have seen that you can enter in 4-H are rabbits, chickens, cows, horses, pigs, dogs, cats, sheep, and goats. I've seen llamas, donkeys, and emu's at the state fair, but I believe those are open class exhibits and most county fairs don't show those.

They should have a sheet that lists all the different projects you can enter in. There are like over 100. They should provide that project list to you at your general 4-H club. Most of the animal projects have specialty clubs to teach you about those animals. Normally you have to attend a certain number of general 4-H club meetings and a certain number of specialty club meetings for the projects that have specialty clubs. And there are certain meetings you aren't supposed to attend at least one. Like for instance with rabbits, you have to normally attend one tattoo meeting where you learn how to tattoo your rabbits in the ear so you can identify them when you show them.
