Keep your backpack with you at all times, and try to get the suitcase in a place where you can see it.
If it is big, it needs to be left at the end of the carriage, so you need to lock it, and if possible, lock it to the rack where you store it.
Most people travel without problems, but better safe than sorry.

I´m sorry to say this, you are not safe anywhere. Even if you think you are in a safe place, like in the centre of Paris for example (or any city of the world, where you think nothing will happen to you). I give you an example, my mother went to Paris for the first time when she was 60 and she had a lot of friends with her, but she was robbed, without noticing anything, until she came to the hotel and found out, her money were robbed. Luckily she had not so much with her, but these things happen all over the world now, the thieves are so "clever" nowadays and more bad things can happen. Of course those things don´t happen all the time, but please do be careful. Hope I din´t scare you, but do be cautious. Have a nice holiday.

Backpacks are the "safest" lagguage for train travelling. Noone spares them a second look, especially if it looks like it's been used for some time. Nice and expensive looking suitcases (especially Samsonites and the likes) are very "attractive" for thieves due to their price (and it's generally assumed there's something of worth in it, whereas a backpack belongs to a student or a mountaineer...)

On the other hand, large suitcase with wheels is very impractical to handle in train - you'll have problems fitting it in a lagguage compartment, lifting it up (on lagguage rack and in the train itself), and in case the wheels brake (I've seen it happen numerous times) you have a heavy bag that you can't lift. Having one big (75 liters and more), comfortable backpack and one small personal bag/backpack is much easier to carry around and it leaves your hands free.

I say whoever wants to mess with luggage, will do it no matter their color. Even though I like to blend with the crowd while traveling and NOT look like a tourist, I think you'll be ok with your pink bags. After all, if someone decides to run away with them, they're easier to spot and follow ;)
