Because liberals are nuts!!!
Just kidding. I think that most people are more like frustrated by opposing views because the view is as different as day and night, and one side cannot understand the other, and they do not truly hate each other (a few nutjobs excluded)
As for why we do not search for common grounds or compromises, most views are so divided that there are not common grounds. As for compromises, that has been done and it is a problem...here is why.
Say that we have a moral issue and the liberals have one side and the conservatives have the other. Visually, we see this.
liberal-------------------conservative
Now if you compromise and say that the liberals give up quite a bit and the conservatives hold on pretty tight. We see.
------liberal------------conservative-
Now, there is STILL an issue, but the end points are not the same. There will still be fighting over who is right and wrong. and there will be another compromise. But in this scenario, the liberals are starting at a disadvantage because they have already given up more.
Okay for a practical example, the other direction. Gay marriage. There is a serious debate here. Liberals fighting for "rights" and conservatives fighting for "morals" Now if a conservative gives in, then they have given more than the liberal, and when the fight for multiple wives, etc comes up (and it would) then they have already let their morals slide closer to that, and on and on. Both sides see the danger, so compromise is not acceptable to most.

While much of what you say is true you need to understand the context. America's political process has always been and will always be contentious. You would be shocked if you read some of the political propaganda published in the 1800's.
But rather than loosing sleep over it you should realize that this is what has held America together for so long while other countries have failed. You see, here we argue quite a bit. Some get personal, some get pretty ugly. There is a lot of mud slung all over the place.
Compare that to countries where such matters are decided in the streets with fire-bombs and bullets. Where heads of state are more likely to be assassinated then voted out. The lid it kept secured by the pressure relief valve of politics. .
No matter how powerful a political party may get they are always one election away from total irrelevancy.

As a preliminary thought, hate is a very strong word! I guess it all comes down to what Michael Jackson's proverbial line stated... "the man in the mirror." It's great you can initiate change and I hope others can follow suit. Ask yourself how willing are you to compromise on certain issues? Is compromise actually attainable? I do think that this issue should be taken a little more lightly however. I hear people saying, "Bush is a Nazi." Come on people. He isn't gasing millions of people for their immutible characteristics. You may disagree about foreign policy or privatization of social security but come on! You said it best... we are so lucky to be given the chance to disagree. The rest is collateral!

Most people don't hate each other over political views. I am a liberal as well, my family is all conservative and my best friend is conservative. The people who hate based solely on political views need to have their head checked. The world is made up of all different kinds of people. When people learn to accept others for who they are and not who they think they are, we will all be better off as a society.

Not everyone can think openly and not everyone know how to think openly.
Why people hate each other? Different cultural and way of living, something that you agree with doesnt mean it is accepted everywhere in the world.
For example, there might be something that other races doing which in your case you think is wrong.
I have studied a very interesting quote in my moral studies during my A-level, "there is no right or wrong in this world", it is depend on how you see the matter and from what aspect. For me, I regard the things that brings constructive effect to social is positive which is right to me, and destructive as wrong to me.
What my point is, people have their own thinking, own policy, own way to live. If that person can't think openly, you better just forget to argue with him, cause it won't do you any good.

It does seem a bit ridiculous doesn't it? I don't know the answer for it though. There is agreement on some issues but then the "fighting" starts on how to get it done and so nothing gets done. There is disagreement on others but instead of compromise the finger waving and pointing start and again nothing gets done. Sighhhh.... Maybe one day we'll all grow up and figure it out?

Most display hate because they sit behind a keyboard. Talk to people face to face, you will find that humor usually entails, and people are much more friendly in person, whatever side they are on. Only the most ignorant don't see any view other than their own, as redeemable or acceptable.
EDIT: Example, I like "You Asked!!!", Jessica Rabbit, suthrnlyts2004, and Micky, even though they have stated they would not vote for Ron Paul. I agree with them on many things other than that. I know there are others, but I don't remember all the names on here.

I don't hate you, I probably just disagree with you on a lot of issues. I don't feel the need to belittle you because your views differ from mine and I don't understand why a lot of people on here ask make inflamitory and accusitive statements when they don't know anything about the person they are deriding.

I think you're seeing hatred where there is just healthy and spirited disagreement.
When you boil it all down..Liberals and Conservatives all want what is truly best...they simply have exact-opposite philosophies on how to accomplish this.
Take the distribution of wealth for example.
Liberals want to distribute wealth by removing the disproportionate amount from those that have it and distributing it to those who do not.
Conservatives want to distribute wealth by encouraging everyone to do better for themselves...and in the process ...whether by investing in business that creates jobs..or by consuming products made by others, also creating jobs...they help others do better for themselves.
