In summer, a small amout once a week is enough. In winter, once every couple of months is enough.

The above reference is OK, but you should note that, in general, watering should not be a time-based action. The actual amount of watering a plant requires is going to depend on the type of plant as well as pot size, humidity, amount of light, and temperature. The last three are going to vary. The best approach is to touch the soil to determine whether or not watering is required. The website above also suggests using a stick--as the top of the soil may be dry, but not underneath. As far as cacti are concerned, it depends on where they are from, but I would at least let the surface of the soil become dry to the touch before even considering watering again. You will then want to give the plant a fair amount of water and let it dry out again, as cacti have evolved to assimilate large amounts of water in short amounts of time. This is assuming that you are using well-drained cactus soil--as sitting in very wet soil for a prolonged time will rot/kill cacti. If the plant is in ordinary potting soil, I would water it less. As previously mentioned, this can be from 2 times a week for a plant in a hot, dry, sunny location, to once a month in a humid, cloudy, cool environment. Good luck.

Cactus is a desert-plant so does not require much watering. Do you have it inside or outside, we had loads of them outside in SA on the farm and never ever watered them.:)
