We' re from Indiana and we call a vacuum a sweeper. My sis in law married a guy from Wisconsin. When she visited his family for the first time, she wanted to clean up for his mom while she was at work. She asked him, "Where's your mom's sweeper? I want to sweep the floors for her." So he went and got the broom. She said "No, not the broom, I want to sweep the carpets in here for your mom." He goes, "Sweep the CARPETS? What the hell are you talking about? Do you mean VACUUM the carpets? I'll get the vacuum." He had never heard the term "sweeper" before! LOL And he freaks out whenever he hears it! Now we jokingly argue all the time over whether it's a vacuum or a sweeper. LOL

LOL They also say "soda" in Wisconsin and we say "pop" here. My dad is for New Mexico and says "Coke" for every soft drink, and to go out to eat! It took my husband forever to figure out what my dad was talking about when he asked him if he wanted "to go for a Coke." lol He would just look at me all confused and go, "Uh, okaaaayyy." I had to explain to him my dad was asking him if he wanted to go to Burger King. LOL

LOL. Too funny! I feel your pain. I grew up in Ohio and Indiana and I actually use both terms. When I'm in the act of cleaing, I'm "vacuuming" the carpet, but when I refer to the object itself, it's a sweeper.
I cannot believe that other folks have never heard that! I thought everyone knew what a sweeper is. Hm. That's what I get for being in the Midwest, huh?

I live in Michigan and, in my family at least, it seems to be interchangeable. I personally say "vacuum" though much of my family says "sweeper." Like I said though, it's interchangeable so sometimes they'll say vacuum and sometimes they'll say sweeper. I do however have an uncle that cuts out all the nonsense and calls it a "vacuum sweeper." :)

I live in CA, and I say vacuum, I never thought of calling it a sweeper before. But my family does associate sweeper with a broom though.

I'm from Pittsburgh, PA, and I say sweeper. A broom requires a dustpan. A sweeper (whether mechanical or has a suction system) does not.

I was born and raised in Ohio, then moved to Kentucky as an adult. I honestly say "vacuum sweeper".
But I get teased for calling "soda" a "pop". Some Eastern Kentuckians even call it "Coke" - no matter what kind of pop it is.
We had guests from Scotland once (a group of middle schoolers with their chaperones) and they said they called pop "juice."
I love this kind of stuff! :)

This is one where I use both terms and I really can't remember seeing a major difference regionally for some reason.
