I have a guest crashing for a while and wanted to set up the computer so he can ONLY access the internet; none of my private files and drives. He's a computer scientist so naturally I'm a little weary of him, until at least I start to trust him a little more. Are there any free programmes I can use that will restrict access for another user on my windows XP Home Edition PC?
Thanks! :)

Get a program called TweakXP which enables you to hide various parts of the control panel, explorer (drives) and whatever else you don't want your guest to see. Only put the Explorer icon on the desktop, disable the Start menu (Kiosk mode) and you have the perfect PC for all users who don't understand computers! LOL

If you have Vista, there is a specific version for that too.

If he knows computers like you said, you won't be able to do anything without him knowing that you've locked him out, which will probably make him suspiscious of what you have on there. Hence more determined to get through when you're not there.
If you're really worried about him seeing certain files, I would just burn them to disk and delete them from the hard drive until he goes.
Better safe than sorry.

First. You could set up a new restricted account for your friend and hide the files and folders using "properties" in the folders section of windows. If not try these:

Try this site: http://www.protect-folders.com/
It has a useful utility free to download for 30 days use to give you time to sort your friend out.

Or try this site: http://www.cypherix.co.uk/password_protect.htm

Just assign him a Limited Account. He can't install a lot of software without having the Administrators permission and he will not be able to view, open, or modify any of your files.

You won't be able to do much if you have Home edition.

You can setup restricted user accounts but he will still be able to open your files. He won't be able to delete them, that's all.

If he reboots in safe mode as the Administrator then he could do more or less anything e.g. change his user permissions to Adminstrator and therefore access everything.

Just enable your Guest account and password protect your account. Also, make sure your admin account is password protected otherwise he can boot up into safe mode and do just about anything - like change your password.
