Why do retailers (Wal-mart, Home Depot, etc.) always expect more out of their employees than they are willing to pay them? Retail is quick to point out to the customers' "you get what you pay for"; but, when it comes to flip side of the coin, their attitude is, why shouldn't we expect more out you than we are willing to pay you?

I know of people who have been working for Wal-mart for over 20 years and still don't even make a measely $15 an hour. At Home Depot, people there are paid so little money that I have seen almost on a regular bases where they would hire as many as 10 people at a time and within 3 weeks or less, all of them have quit. Rather than deal with the issue, management makes out it doesn't understand why and writes it off as just part of the retail statistics.

What do you think?

What makes it so bad is, companies like this tell you they hate the unions, but they do almost everything they can to make a person want to unionize, then make out it wasn't their fault.

Well retailers set an average pay by competing with the businesses around them. Yes many retailers expect alot of the associates, and unfortunately do not pay them enough or they say they make up for it in benefits they provide for them, but because of the high turnovers these businesses have, doesn't effect them as much because there is always someone out there who needs a job, and they will always be in business. I'm with you on pay. Yes, they should pay there associates of many years more, they are the ones who make that company run, and turn profits for that store out of the sweat, and work of the associate who is just making $8-$9.00 an hr.Walmart is notorious for this they pulled in 256 billion in sales last year, and only share a very tiny portion of this with there associates. What do they do with all that money?? Investments, overhead, but they still keep billions in there pockets. As they say the rich keep getting richer, and the poor..well we still remain with just enough to get by.
