i have got to say that yes they are very expensive but our Kirby was purchased 17 years ago and is still going strong in fact 2 -3 months ago at a cost of just under £20 I sat and watched the Kirby engineer strip our Kirby down, clean virtually every part and put it back together again, it took him nearly an hour to do this

I am well aware of why they offer the maintenance service, its to get into the house to pitch for the latest model which he tried 3 times and 3 times he failed, we don't have the maintenance contract anymore but when we did they would replace any part on the vacuum free of charge and over the years we have had our money back just from the parts they have replaced

value for money has got to be yes because in that same 17 year period we would of purchased a lot more cheaper carpet cleaners which would of maybe cost the same amount of money but the Kirby does clean very well

bottom line is this, they are a very expensive vacuum cleaner but do an excellent cleaning job and not just on the carpet

if you have had the demonstration then you will know what I mean, if you have not seen the Kirby demonstration then its worth asking them round just to see how dirty your house actually is when you thought it was spotless, you can use your existing vacuum cleaner and then they will use the Kirby and still pick up lots of dirt and dust

hope this helps

thanks

Mick

I purchased a Kirby years ago. It lasted no longer than any vacuum cleaner on the market today. It was hard to pull around, but it did a good job. My gripe was the high price. My daughter just bought a real nifty Bissell for only $169.00. There are professional type vacuums that are available at Lowe's for only 400 bucks. And from what I understand are excellent vacuums. The brand is Dyson. ( see link below) If I were you, I would pass. Half of the price (or more) is commission for the salesman. It is a gimmick because you can buy the same vacuum on eBay for probably less than half the price you would pay the salesman. I paid for my vacuum for years, even when it didn't work right. Hope this helps.

Yes I agree with want alot of people are saying here. The Dyson is a very nice upright, better than the bulky, heavy Kirby Upright. The Dyson DC 17 is the nicest Dyson around. It will pick up just about everything and it is a fraction of the cost. Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew has a great deal on the DC 17. I mean a really really good deal. If you purchase a Dyson DC 17 All Floors from them for only $499.99 (only available on phone special, not the internet) you will receive a Mini Turbine Tool ($69.99 value), a Flexi Crevice Tool ($29.99 value), a Soft Dusting Brush ($29.99 value), a Mattress Tool ($29.99 value), a Multi Angle Brush ($34.99 value) and a Low Reach Tool ($49.99 value) FREE! That is a $244.94 Value. And they do get that kind of money for those pieces. You get everything the Animal gives you plus the Soft Dusting Brush, a Mattress Tool, a Multi Angle Brush and a Flexi Crevice Tool. (the Animal and All Floors are the same machine just one is yellow and one is purple, the difference is the tools they come with). The only thing you don't get is the Zorb (which almost no one uses anyway). Plus you get for All Floors with all the tools for $50 LESS! I just bought one today because it was such a great deal. They are just getting them in so it will be like three days before they get it in and ship it out. I highly recommend getting this deal and this vacuum. The vacuum is great and the deal is even better. Here is their number (remember you have to call it in in order to get it, they can't list it on the internet) (If you want to see all the features of the machine just go on mrvacandmrssew.com and look at the Dyson DC17 Animal and imagine it in a yellow color, then subtract the Zorb and add all the extra tools the package comes with, go on Dyson.com to see them all):

I have had my Kirby for about 15 years. It does a great job. However, I did not pay the original asking price. I haggled and got it for about 30 % less. It came with a hard plastic tote that holds the hose, all the tools and wands in one little carry-around light-weight container about 15 inches high x 6 inches deep x 12 inches wide. I do my own maintenance on it and so far have not had to replace anything.

If I have any complaint, it is the static charge that attracts pet hair to the plastic wands when I am using the dusting attachments instead of the carpet head in areas where the carpet head won't reach. This is only an annoying feature. All vacuums with plastic wands will do that if you have a dog or cat. A quick swipe with a damp cloth or paper towel when I put it away takes care of that.

I use it in compact mode to vacuum the mattresses with the carpet head, use with the attachments for walls, window and door frames, windowsills, window treatments including blinds, etc. It also came with a turbo brush which does a wonderful job on fabric upholstery when used with the hose and wand.

In 30 years of housekeeping prior to getting the Kirby, I had used up 5 other vacuum cleaners.

My parents had one and initially it was great but caused a lot of hassle over time and eventually broke down and now just sits in the attic collecting dust. Plus, they are VERY heavy (at least they were) and come with 20 attachments that end up floating all over the house and you can never find when you really need them. I just bought a Dyson DC-17 and it is by far the best vaccume that I have ever used personally. After running it over my carpets once I had a whole container of dirt and crap that my other vaccume (hoover) didn't pick up. As I remember it, a Kirby ran for about $2000 when my parents bought one and my Dyson was $479 at Sam's club. Use that $1500 to go on a cruise and you won't be disappointed with either the dyson or your vacation!

We have had the monster for 15 years. For the first month the bags felt like 4 Kg of sugar each time they were emptied. We thought we would have to renew the carpets, but after about 3 months they started getting newer, so much so that we never did renew them, and we sold them with the house and got cash in hand !!!!! We eventually did have it serviced £30, and they put a new lead on it gratis. We asked the engineer about the heavy bags, and he said that it was grit embedded in the fibers of the carpet.which had been beaten and sucked out. I REST MY CASE

This question is asked about every week.. I live where Kirby is manufactered... I do recommend them. They last forever.. .Seriously, my mother in law got a refurbished one as a wedding gift over 30yrs. ago and it's still running ! Her mother in law still has hers and she got hers for her wedding over 60 yrs. ago... As long as you have a serivice center that "rebuilds" them it's worth it.. They are heavy.. We used them in college in all the dorms... You may be able to find a used on pretty cheap and depending on the age of the unit will determine the cost to rebuild.. my in laws cost about $50, a yr. but that includes all bags, belts and hoses so essentially it's like a new vacuum everytime she gets it "fixed". Call around some vacuum repair shops and see if you can get one used/rebuilt.. Save your $2000..... I hope that helps and good luck
