Yeah, it's called the Law of Humanity. If you can't follow it, you don't really deserve to be a member of the human race. Sorry, but I don't want to live in the same world with people who would only pull over to help an animal that THEY injured if there was a legal penalty for not doing so.

Attached is an interesting legal case involving a struck dog. The gist of the ruling (which doesn't specifically address your question, on peripherally) is that you should only stop for a dog if it's safe to do so, which to me implies that you do not have a legal responsibility to do so.
In the cited case, stopping to help the dog caused an accident. Almost universally, courts hold human life in higher regard than animal life.
As other folks have pointed out, whether there is a moral imperative to stop is a different question entirely.

That will depend on where you live. The county I live in, yes there is a law stating you need to stop and try to render aid.

Yuo have damaged someone else's property, and you are leaving the scene of the accident. The law varies with location.

why wouldn't you check? isn't that just being a kind compassionate person? if it was your dog and someone hit is wouldn't you want that person to check? or to let you know? isn't it just the right thing to do?

one of the worst things to see is a dead animal in the road. i don't think its the law, but you should check on it. if its alive take it to the vet or something, it could be someone's loved pet!

That's considered hit and run. And only a very cruel person wouldn't stop.
