Do you call it lunch or supper?

I am from the north, but my in-laws are from the south. Well, once when we were visiting them, my father-in-law had informed us that we will all be going out to eat for supper (he told us in the morning). After they had come in from fishing around noon, I had lunch made for everyone. He just looked at me and said, "we're supposed to be going out." I said, "yeah, but that's later, right?".... so, my husband had to clue me in that supper really means lunch around there. I had to explain to everyone that where I'm from, supper means dinner and we eat lunch around noon. We all laughed and just saved the "lunch/supper" for "dinner" that night and went out to eat as planned. (I sure did feel like an idiot though)

Supper=Dinner, unless it is a Sunday mid afternoon supper/dinner around like 2 or 3 pm
Don't feel like an idiot, he was not clear with you. Since lunch means lunch and everyone knows what it means, he should have been more specific, as should your husband know better since he appparently knows the way his father uses the term.

It depends. The word "dinner" doesn't neccessarily mean the last meal of the day. I've always been taught that the word "dinner" means the biggest meal of the day. Therefore, in my family we usually use "dinner" and "lunch" interchangably.

On the other hand, I have never heard lunch/ supper used interchangably so they might just use supper like we use dinner. I hope that made sense... lol.

Lunch is when you eat in the afthernoon. Supper is the same time you eat dinner at night.

We say breakfast, lunch, then dinner/supper for the evening meal here in Indiana. (Some people say dinner for the evening meal and some people say supper, but we always say lunch for the noon meal.)

I call it lunch. I've always said that dinner and supper were the same thing, but my grandpa always says that supper is lunch. Who knows.

Supper is definately dinner to me and lunch is lunch. i think they thought what you did was cute though, so no worries. i would have done the same thing.
