I think there are several things going on here. Johnny Depp suffered from the "Pretty Boy" syndrome, not getting taken seriously enough by a lot of males for quite a while because he was so popular among girls and young women. Just like with Brad Pitt, though, he proved how good an actor he was, and gained many people's respect. Also, his popularity with the women who liked him when he was young hasn't diminished too much, and he also appears young enough that girls and young women today find him very attractive as well.

I loved Johnny Depp when I was in HS, pre Pirate days. Everyone likes him now b/c of the Pirates movies.

Johnny Depp is in all of the "Pirates of the Carribian" movies. A lot of people like that movie it is the most popular movie(s) he played in.

I've always liked him ever since "Nightmare on Elm Street" & "21 Jump Street". Now more & more people are noticing him because of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean"
He's not looking like a little boy anymore & sexier!

He is lovely isn't he, but i liked him first. I've always been a big fan of Johnny's way before all the POTC movies.

He is just Gorgeous in a mysterious kind of way. He can potray many many many differents types of characters in his movies. He has came a really long way and has gained so much respect. He is a great actor!!
I've loved him since I saw "Cry Baby" as a kid!!!
