How long do I have?

I would tell you it has gotten better, and it has gotten worse. Some things never change at all.

50 years ago, in 1957, it was still illegal in some states for interracial couples to marry. Schools were not integrated like they are now. Blacks on TV played stereotypical, degrading roles. Now, equality is more or less widespread, although there are still pockets of prejudice. Overall, though, I'm happier living now than I would have been back then.

Technology has improved, and people fly all over the world, easily. The road trip across the country is almost a lost art.

People drive everywhere. The people who walk or bike to work are recognized as health nuts.

It's more dangerous for kids to play outside, because Bad Things happen to them. Sexual predators, kidnapping, gangs. Gangs are more widespread than they were in the 50's. And a lot more violent.

People are more reliant on electricity than ever before. Many Americans (particularly the younger generation) are completely crippled if the power is out for more than a day, and they can't microwave their dinners.

Politics still suck.

People still lie and hurt one another.

John Lennon was murdered. (Oh, wait... 1957? You don't know about the Beatles. Nevermind.)

John F. Kennedy was murdered (assasinated), too.

That about sums it up for me.

Well..., here's what I'd say....

Step into the future...
What you've dreamed of...
Has a life a rose..
Not meant for...
Oh don't worry about the black smoke...
It;s not a wizard in its cape...
It's just an everyday thing....
What? I l know about the trees..
Not many left eh?
Well...look around you....
That was there home..
What is our home now...
I share your perspective...
The bird did get shot...
But hey....that's what people want....
I know I know...it's a cold when it's supposed to be hot and hot when its supposed to be cold..
Heard of polar ice caps?...
There breaking...
Global Warming...might we say man made destruction...
What....this isn't it...
Let's take you to small things that have made a bigger differnece.
Do you see that man leavng his own father?
Do you see that rape?
Do you see the murdering?
What about kidnapping, killing, sadness, tears, blood, melancholy, unhappiness, fear.....
I's say Hermit....you might as well go sleep in that cave for 50 more years.... maybe by then I'd have done soemthing to change this world and when you come out...you'll see something beautiful...unlike this horrible site of the....Current Civilzation on hour Mother Earth....that humans have practically destroyed completely.

Mr. Hermit, there just like you a little crazy.

Except
The people are
High energy, "a perpetual motion machine with a short attention span," boastful, risk-taking; "driven, restless, and unable to keep still"; they comes up with new ideas constantly but has trouble separating the good kind from the bad; fast-talking, feels destined to change the world, they gathers friends while making lots of enemies

The world is
Overpopulated, Polluted, animals and the environment are in trouble, there are wars and rumors of wars, ONE quarter of the world's population live in poverty, billion are illiterate, billion lack access to safe drinking water and 1 billion go hungry daily

People still fall in love and get married and have children. There are thousands of activities for your enjoyment and pleasure.

Is there anything else you would like to know Mr. Hermit?

Not good, caveman, not good at all. While we're off fighting to save animals of a rare breed, honest and decent human beings are becoming the endangered species. While trying to gain equality for all, the world has risen to levels of perversion never seen before. Environmentalists are making saavy plans of "going green" while criminals do their own thang when green with envy. Oh, there is so much more, dear hermit, so enjoy your life in your lonely world while you can. We may come destroy you next.

I would say that unfortunately, it is not too good. Hate has become stronger than ever, more and more people care only about money, they are filled with nothing but greed and lust. Many of them will do anything to get to the top, not caring about the people they step on on the way there. There is poverty and war, sickness and pain. Our civilization has become isolated, each involved only in their own world, hooked on the internet and video games, addicted to our music and cell phones. Society has lost touch of what is beautiful in life, living in a virtual world of their own. Many people have stopped caring about what happens to others and revel in their good fortune if they have it, spending money that could be helping others on things they don't need, and if they don't, wishing they did, and complaining about how horrible their lives are. The environment is falling apart, and this is just causing people to hate each other more, fighting and placing blame on who or what is responsible, but not doing anything to fix it.

But I would also say that it’s still okay. There is still good in the world, people who care about each other. Though a minority, there are people out there who help those in need, who give to those in need and appreciate what they have. There are still lovers of life out there, along with poets, artists, heroes, counselors. There are people who give this world beauty, love, and joy. There are people who listen when you talk to them, and console you when you need it. There is love, in the simplest form, and in the most complex. While at first glance it may seem like hate has taken over, but love still reigns, you just have to look a little harder for it.

Same society, different toys. Information and expression
is more accessible. Presuming that you went into the
cave because you protest expression then you should
probably go back into the cave where the Internet
can't find you. However, although unlikely in such a
scenario, if you have insights to share then the information
age is at your finger tips.

Our current civilization has been hermitized on a global level... people are so technologically advanced and "in-touch"... they have lost the sense of what I think it is to be human... to connect to another person in an emotional/spiritual way.... there are more people in the world today than ever.... and yet we are some of the unhealthiest, loneliest.... self-serving to exist.

Frankly, I don't think the hermit would ask. I mean, he has a reason for being a hermit. All I could say would be that nothing has changed except the methods used for the same motivations, & that poor little earth ain't gonna last much longer with all the abuse, so enjoy yourself & stay where you are.

well, gas prices certainly went up, it's about$3.00 or so [depending on where you are]. And man EVERYONE has a myspace. Its a website where, meeting people, networking, even dating can be established. Cell phones.... 50
years ago there weren't any cell phones. Now everybody and their grandma's have a cell phone. There so tiny and practically every cell phone has a built in camera.
No one every does anything without complaining. Now-a-days everything is simpler and people get lazier more and more. Society today craves media, Internet and a faster solution forr everything. No one can think fo theme selves, it really sad. I suggest you stay in your cave.
LoL.

Oh, I would just bow my head offering my silent salutations !
Somebody who spent 50 years has to be revered to the best of our abilities. And very difficult for others to realise how deep that hermit's level of perception would have reached, deep enough to feel everything around without the need to ask about anything ! So, just place our ignorance with silence at his feet.
