Its not just that women have a larger quantity of muscle and fat padding the hip area.
The entire pelvic bone structure is different from the man's because of the fact that women are designed to carry children. If a pathologist or archaeologist were given a set of bones and nothing else to go on, they could determine the gender simply by looking at the pelvic bones.
A woman who transgenders will end up with a wider butt than a man who is born naturally this way, and a man who transgenders will typically have a very narrow hip area, unless s/he gets plastic surgery to build up the fleshy area and make the hips appear wider.

No you hips wouldn't change if altered. A woman's hips are wider so we have room to carry a child in there. I don't even think you could surgically have them widen if you wanted to become a woman. You'd just have smaller waist, which most women think is a good thing. Hope that answers your question.

Hip size will relate to all over body size of the person male or female. Women's hip bones are placed wider for childbirth. Also, they appear wider because women have more fat around that area. A sex change would not affect your natural hip placement/size.

Differences between male and female pelvics:
1. In the female, the bones are more delicate, the female pelvis is less massive, and the muscular impressions are less marked.
2. In the female, the ilia flare more laterally and the anterior iliac spines are more widely separated causing a WIDENING of the hips with respect to the male.
3. In the female, the superior aperture of the lesser pelvis is WIDER .
4. In the female, the subpubic angle (angle between the ischiopubic rami) is WIDER (usually greater than 90°)
5. In the female, the sacrum is shorter, WIDER, and less curved
6. In the female, the acetabulum is smaller.
7. In the female, the pelvic inlet is round or oval with respect to the heart-shaped pelvic inlet in the male.
So the answer to your question is that the way the bones are aligned and angled makes the hips bigger in a woman. It is not actually the size of the bone or fat around the hips. As for the man to woman thing, I'm not really sure what you're asking but yes if a man suddenly transformed into a woman his pelvic cavity would change and vice versa.

sort of both, womens hips bones are wider, they are at a diferent angle (hence women 'wiggle' when they walk) and they have a larger aperture so they appear to be a different shape
on top of that women also carry more weight in that area that most men, but only because women carry more fat then men on the whole - you'll notice that blokes will often have a 'girlie' bottom if they are unfit and carring a bit of weight
If a man becomes a woman it is mostly a change in hormomes and soft tissues, not a whole rearrangement of physical structure, hence many transexuals have facial plastic surgery to reduce adams apple or brow/chin size so no, a sex change would not alter your pelvis size, although you could have silicone implants to make them look bigger.

A womans pelvis is wider so as they are able to give birth! Some women have small hips! That why you might hear people say certain women have good child bearing hips! No if a man was to become a woman his hips wouldnt widen and vice versa! We cant change our bone structure!

The skeletal structure of a female shows that the hips and pelvic area are wider to allow expansion opening up area for a baby to pass through. Which is part of the pain of giving birth. Females also have more fats cells which allows for protection of baby inside womb.
This does not change if a woman was to have a sex change. You can't change structures of bones.
Only bone loss due to deterioration from diseases or accidents.

well they're wider for a reason- they have to fit a baby through there. and men don't have babies so they don't need wider hips. They're also differently shaped. below is a link to a picture of the bones.
