A square meter is a unit of area. A centimeter is a unit of length. They're not directly comparable.

You can compare centimeters to meters (not "square meters"). A centimeter is 1/100 of a meter. One meter is 100 centimeters.

You can also compare square meters to square centimeters. A square meter is 1 meter by 1 meter in size. That's also 100x100 centimeters, which is 10,000 square centimeters. So one square meter is the same as 10,000 square centimeters.

A square that is one meter on a side will have an area of one square meter and a perimeter of 4 meters (which is 4*100 = 400 centimeters).

Hi Matt, The easy way to think about this is that there are 100 centimeters in a meter, and to measure the size of the square you have to multiply one side of the square by another. Therefore, a square that is 1x1 meters is 1 sq meter, but 100x100 is 10,000 centimeters, therefore there are 10,000 centimeters in a square meter. I hope this makes sense...

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 square metre is an area that has each side measuring 1 metre, The area of a square is equal to the product (multiplication) of its sides. So a square with 1m sides has an area of 1x1 = 1 square metre. However, a metre is equal to 100cms, so the area is equal to
1mx1m
OR..
100cm x 100cm = 10,000 square cms

So 1 square metre does not equal 400 square centimetres, it equals 10,000 square centimetres.

You would need 2.2m x 2.2m to cover the 7ft x 7ft and 1m x 1m to cover the 2ft x 3ft. Hope this helps.
