A simple answer is that to know who you are you need to know where you came from.

You can learn a lot from history: You understand the forces and ideas that shape the world that you live in.

You can also learn a lot about politics and human weakness: The great British historian AJP Taylor once said that "the only thing that history teaches us is that history teaches us nothing" i.e. that human beings make the same mistakes. A better understanding of history would teach us to understand, and maybe avoid them.

History has a way of repeating itself. By studying history, you hope people don't do the same stupid things as before. It also helps to recognize certain events before they actually happen.

I personally don't think it is important but i asked my history teacher once and she said because we can learn what people before us did, and not make the same mistakes they did. Hope it helps!!

It is more importent to study history because we can learn what we shouldnt do such as slavery.
