gandamack - there's new evidence that the torture and inhumane treatment were Cheney's idea, that's why I ask.

The whole lot of them (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzalez -- the entire gang) should stand trial for Crimes Against Humanity for both the waging of the terrorist action in Iraq AND authorizing torture.

To those who said no:

1) Most of those tortured have subsequently been released because they had nothing to do with, and had no knowledge of any terrorists or terrorist activities.

2) Torture doesn't save lives (it does NOT yield accurate information); it costs lives, since everyone on the planet now hates us, and many more than ever are willing to engage in criminal behavior to harm us.

3) If terrorists are bad, and we ARE the terrorists, doesn't that make us the bad guys? YOU may want to be the moral equivalent of Hussein and Bin Laden, but no human being does.

Yes, and the people above defending him are moon patrolers. Lead by example. We throw a fit when our soldiers are captured and tortured. We treat it like it is the worst thing in the world....because it is. Granted some of the tactics they can't use are stupid, but the main ones aren't. Cheney should resign for many reasons, rather see him impeached though, it would make me happier to see the crook go down.

While I understand that the terrorists have no compunctions about torture and summary execution, I can't belive how many of you are willing to look the other way while we stoop to their level. We are never going to win the respect, support, and leadership of the international community if our hands are just as bloody as our enemies'. If we are going to make progress in the fight against terrorists, we CANNOT do it alone. We need international help. And we are not going to get it by giving them nothing better than a choice between two evils.

This is the United States of America. We stand for something. We stand for liberty, freedom, justice, democracy, and strength. Refusing to repay torture with torture is not weakness, it is strength. Our current administration wants the US to stand for fear, invasion, torture, and imprisonment. I reject that, and every proud American should do likewise.

If Cheney violated international law, then Cheney should resign and prepare to face criminal proceedings. We are a nation of laws, and those laws apply to all citizens, including Cheney and his puppet dictator.

What's wrong with torture, and why should anyone apologize for it?

Torture is simply a weapon of war, just like an M16, tank, missile, or nuke. And just like those other weapons, there is a time and a place to use it. Conversely, just because it is in your arsenal, does not mean you use it all the time. Sometimes you need an M16, sometimes you need a nuke, it depends on the situation. It's the same with torture, sometimes you use it, sometimes you don't. Nevertheless, using torture is morally no different than using any other weapon as long as it is appropriate.

How anyone can defend terrorist after watching them behead Americans and mutilate the bodies of our people is beyond me. Whatever happens to them could not be as bad as they treat our people. The radicals have one goal and that is to destroy us. Those soft hearted liberals that defend them should look at the bodies of our people that were mutilated and reevaluate their feelings.

He doesn't listen to your ilk.
He has been a great Vice President and a great American.

Why are you so concerned for the welfare of the enemies of the U.S.? That is strange but so liberal.

Who would be Dubya's puppet master? No just leave him alone. Every time he and Dubya screw up or more is revealed it just gives the Democrats more to use against the Republicans in the 2008 election.

By 'torture", do you mean:

a) putting underwear on their heads, or

b) cutting their heads off with rusty swords.

Because I am pretty sure only one of these was done at GITMO, and the other was done by the enemies, which therefore makes the one at GITMO acceptable.

Nope. You realize that there are Presidents (I include recent Democrats), who have intentionally moved detainees off of U.S. soil for that express purpose?
