I assume you don't have her with a male. A female may do that when she is full of eggs and has no male to breed with. It's not the end of the world and will not harm her, but you will need to condition her a few weeks before trying to breed her.

If she has released only a few eggs and you have a ready male you want to breed her with, I would try placing her with that male. Otherwise, just remove any uneaten eggs so they dont; foul the tank and start conditioning her again.

This is something all betta breeders deal with sooner or later.

It is normal for the female betta to eat the eggs. If the eggs are dropped without fertilisation by the male betta - they are not going to develop into fries. (Hence, eating up the eggs actually help prevent contaimination in the tank.) The male betta plays an extremely important role in the hatching process and sometimes, I really am quite respectful for their fatherly love. (You will find out why)

When you find that your bettas are ready to deliver:
Male: start building up bubble nest
Female: getting pregnant (not bloated or over fed) and vertical stripes can be seen (sometimes faint)

Do not mix the 2 bettas together at once, put them into 2 seperate clear containters that they could see each other but not fight. The male betta will ususally 'flare'. But if the female responded similarly in an aggressive manner, you can decide if you wish to go ahead - because a fight seems unavoidable. If the female betta does not responded agressively, chances of a fight is lower.

In preparing the breeding ground (beforehand):
(1) Get a basin or any container (with a base area almost equivalent to an A4 size paper; slightly smaller is fine.)
(2) Pour in aged water (those that are left for at least 1 day) treated with Indian Almond leaves (I called them "Umbrella leaves") if you have them
(3) Leave the container in a darker side of the room where there isn't much traffic. (If you have got dogs or cats - don't put them on the floor)
(4) Introduce the male and female bettas to their breeding ground - and you can put floating objects (styrofoam wrapped by umbrella leaf) if you want to
(5) Cover the container partially so that (A) the bettas don't jump out of the breeding ground and (B) the bettas are not badly distracted by light and movements.

** Important note: Do not have a water level more than 4 inches deep for the breeding container and leave at least 3 inches from water level to the top of the container to prevent bettas from jumping out easily. The reason for keeping the water not more than 4 inches deep is because the male betta will constantly need to upkeep the bubble nest. Eggs will fall to the bottom of the container and the male betta will pick them up with his mouth and blow them onto the bubble nest again. He can be really busy going up and down many times in an hour. Imagine if your water is too deep, it will be extremely tiring for the male betta and the chances of eggs 'rescued' is slim. As for the female betta, she probably needs some rest. It is fine with the male and female together in the breeding container, don't worry about seperating them.

As your male and female bettas are laying eggs, preparation for a hatchery should be underway.

Eggs (if I remember correctly) will take around 3 - 4 days (within a week) to hatch into fries. Until then, you can remove the parents into their respective containers and take care of the fries separately. These fries will need special food - check out aquarium stores, they sell the hatchery set and food for fries too.

Don't worry if your female betta laid eggs and did not manage to breed them this time round. There are many opportunities in the future. Most importantly, it is to get the necessary arrangements done and knowing what to do after which. It took me quite a few tries to breed my first batch of baby bettas but my friend got it right the second time. (I think it is all about reading up and getting prepared) Fries are extremely vulnerable, poor preparation means all of them will perish.

I read somewhere the other day that the female will eat any eggs that are not put into the bubble nest by the male. I think its natural for her to do so. Maybe they need the extra nutrition from producing and laying the eggs. As long as the male is catching some and getting them into the nest I wouldn't do anything about it.

You did not tell us if your female is with a male betta and you are trying to breed them or not. But don't worry either way this is quite normall for them.

If your female is spawning with another male, then just leave them be and wait till they are done spawning before removing the female. This happens especiallty If this is the first time for the female to spawn, due to lack of experience she may not know what to do.

If she is alone and not breeding, this is the normal behavior, think of it as she is recycling the eggs as this are a good source of protein and she will need the to produce more eggs.

If you have her with a male Betta he should pick the eggs up in his mouth and place them in his nest. If you have no male it doesn't matter if she eats them or not because they're not fertile.

This is natural, like all fish they will eat there own young, or eggs. And its perfectly harmless for the adult fish. if you wanted to save them then you need to get them out quick. and put them in there own tank.

Separate her from her eggs IMMEDIANTLY!!!!

they are violent fish, after she is done, put the male in there ASAP so that he can put the eggs into his bubble nest!
