I heard the heart rate today for the first time and it was 160, does this indicate one way or the other the sex of the child? the mother is in her 13th week.

No, it's an old wives tale. My sons was 165 which supposedly means girl. He's a he lol. I think the old wives tale says if 140 and below it's supposed to be a boy and anything higher is girl. Not true for me or 3 of my friends.

There are medical people that say you can. however in some cases they are wrong. Our first child we recieved a U/S and the tech pointed out the babys penis. They confirmed that the baby was a male by the slower heart rate. I was disapointed I wanted a littel Girl. to the day she was born they said she was a boy, they did a fetal study and the heart rate then indicated that she was a boy. So I finally went and bought a shirt that said daddys little boy. when delivered the doctor aske if I was got to hurt him and I said why he turn the baby and said it was a girl. Maybe the part came off or maybe they just guest U/S 3d show the babies alot better now days and there are other ways to determine the babies sex but I would not depend on just the heart Rate.

Typically, the heart rate is high is the beginning because the fetus is smaller...once the fetus starts to grow, the heart rate usually drops to around the 150s or 140s....sometimes it will stay up near the 160s as well.

We have a son...and he started out high...160s...and dropped into the 140s towards the end.

No - unfortuantely it is just one of those old wives tales.
The theory is above 140 is a girl and below 140 is a boy.
Problem is babies heart rates are always higher earlier in the pregnancy...
My daughters heart rate was consistently above 140 and my sons was consistently below 140. I am pregnant with #3 and the heart rate is consistently 140-145....(they tell me it is a girl :-) )
So while the wives tale was "right" for me... I have many friends who had the oppposite.
It is fun to guess though :-)

No, heart rates will change during the pregnancy. I actually looked this up online, because I wanted to see about my own babies, and all research says that heart rate does not indicate sex. It's just a 50/50 guess.

They say if the baby's heartbeat is more than 140, it's a girl less than 140, it's a boy. That was true for my son and I am 26 weeks with a girl now and that was true for her. Although, it is an old wives' tale and those are only about 50-50 correct. My cousin is pregnant and her baby's heartbeat is about the same as my daughters so it isn't true all the time.

That early I would say its too early to tell...and besides its not always right, just in some cases...

for me personally it was correct...my sons were in the 140's and im 32 weeks with a girl and her heart rate is always in the 150's...............but I have heard of some boys being that high too.

If I were to guess your babies sex..I would say girl from the higher heart rate....good luck and congratulations!

It can but it's not accurate. So 140+ heartbeat is said to be a girl.

But it could be a boy that's active in the womb too.

It's best to just wait for the ultrasound.

as accurate. as any other "guesstimators" (not always) boys generally have a slower heart rate than girls ( usually below 140). Going on that it's a good chance mom's having a boy. OOPS EDIT girl

My doctor said it had to do with if the baby was active versus sleeping when they listened to it. My daughter's was always very high though, 160's, so for her the myth was true.
